Pond Program
The Pond Program is designed to give school age children and teenagers hands on education about ponds. Students are given an opportunity to learn not only what a pond is and its value to the environment but all about the many tiny critters (many are macro-invertebrates) living in the pond. Volunteers help students observe and identify macros such as dragonfly and damselfly larva as well as adult aquatic beetles and bugs and many others. The Nature Center provides a special place, the Discovery Pond, which has a deck with four tables and equipment for observation. Students learn to net and then gently place a variety of macro invertebrates in trays for observation. After learning some basic principles of identification and how to use magnifiers and microscopes, students have a great time meeting critters they never knew existed.
